Medical Use: DHT is the essential androgen responsible for the development of primary sex characteristics in males during embryogenesis, the development of males secondary characteristics during puberty and for male adult sexual function. Prior to puberty stimulation of androgen production with human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) is usually required to achieve androgen concentrations which can be measured with the precision necessary for accurate diagnosis. Individual testing is required to ascertain specific dosages. DHT should never be taken apart from medical treatment by a trained practitioner.

In women, menstrual irregularities, hoarseness, deepening of the voice, clitoral enlargement, increased facial hair growth, hardening of facial features, acne and loss of head hair are common. In pre-pubescent boys an unnatural enhancement of sex characteristics will be accompanied by erectile pain and early loss of scalp hair. Growth may be stunted due to premature bone fusion.
